Every year, the generational transition continues. The children who play happily in small alleys today will play an important role in 10 to 20 years as professional workers, community leaders, or individuals searching for their purpose in life.
In Indonesia, children still make up a large proportion of the population, though growth rates vary by region. This demographic carries significant potential, as well as challenges, depending on how we manage our resources and development policies in the future.
The latest data shows that the ten provinces with the highest percentage of children in 2025 are mostly outside of Java, particularly in eastern Indonesia. All of the provinces on this list have a proportion of children above the national average of 31.47%. Papua is at the top, with 40.03% of its population being children.
This is good news. Children from outside Java have the potential to drive national economic growth, particularly by bridging the economic disparities between Java and other regions.
Therefore, understanding the needs and future of children is crucial. The main priority is to plan for education, digital infrastructure, and affordable, accessible healthcare. With these resources, these children will be able to access broader markets and contribute to more equitable national progress
